The Type Persona Specimen App was designed as a visual and interactive tool for exploring individual typefaces, one at a time and this edition focus on the classic Baskerville font family.

SUMMARY

This app serves both designers and typography enthusiasts who wish to experiment with font weights in real time on a mobile device. It allows users to engage deeper into the details in Baskerville’s font design, appearance, and readability.

PROBLEMS

There are many tools to preview fonts but most of them:
  • Lack showcasing the dynamic comparison across weights and style.
  • Provide fewer to no information on the each character’s versatility and aesthetic

GOALS

  • Let users explore all weights of Baskerville font (Regular, Bold, Medium Oblique, etc.).
  • Offer customization typographic phrase.
  • Enable users to interact and learn more about different characters.

Research & Type Analysis

Used the type persona guide to determine the characteristics of the Baskerville typeface. Analyzed web apps like Adobe Fonts, IBM Pictogram Viewer, and Typeface App.

UI Design

  • Minimalist look for easier readability and interaction having contrast between sharp shapes with rounded textiles.
  • The color palette consists of darker purple and indigo hues which aligns perfectly with Baskerville’s classic and elegant personality.
  • The font color varies throughout the app based on intractability, however the central focal character font is black to ensure high stroke contrast and crisp.

RESULT

  • Users could easily navigate through font weights and preview them in real-time.
  • Users can immediately sense the “persona” of the typeface.
  • A clean, focused UI that puts type at the center.
